The beneficial power of water and its natural properties are utilized in the hydrotherapy programs offered at Armonia Rehabilitation Center, giving patients the opportunity to regain functionality and return to everyday life faster than with conventional methods.
Hydrotherapy is a valuable rehabilitation tool for conditions such as orthopedic injuries, stroke, head injuries, sports injuries, cerebral palsy, post-operative recovery, cardiorespiratory diseases, rheumatic disorders, and paraplegia–tetraplegia. It promotes faster mobilization, improves physical condition and gait retraining, and forms an essential component of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation approach.
Hydrotherapy: The Power of Water
Hydrotherapy leverages the therapeutic effects of water, which arise from its physical properties:
• Buoyancy
Buoyancy facilitates easier and more autonomous movement of the upper and lower limbs, as well as the spine, reducing joint strain and promoting musculoskeletal function.
- When immersed up to the pelvis, the legs support only 50% of body weight.
- Up to the chest: the body supports about 30% of its weight.
- Up to the neck: about 10%.
• Hydrostatic Pressure
Hydrostatic pressure supports the lymphatic system, reducing swelling and hematomas.
It also improves respiratory function by applying gentle pressure to the chest wall, aiding the expulsion of air from the lungs.
• Fluid Resistance
Water resistance increases proportionally with movement speed, providing a safe and effective medium for therapeutic exercise.
Water resists movement equally in all directions, strengthening multiple muscle groups simultaneously and safely — ideal for gait training or limb strengthening that may not be possible on land.
Combined with buoyancy, fluid resistance helps strengthen even the weakest muscles. Resistance can also be adjusted mechanically.
• Warm Water (33–35°C)
Therapeutic pools use warm water, which promotes:
- Muscle relaxation
- Reduction of neuropathic pain
- Reduction of spasticity
How Hydrotherapy Works
Hydrotherapy offers multiple benefits, including:
- Reduced gravitational load during initial movement
- Easier joint motion without strain
- Reduced muscle spasms and improved relaxation
- Strengthening of weak muscles
- Improved walking patterns and balance
- Better trunk stability
- Reduced pain sensitivity
- Improved peripheral and lymphatic circulation
- Enhanced absorption of edema and hematomas
- Increased aerobic capacity
- Reduced fear of falling
- Faster post-operative recovery
Apart from its physical benefits, hydrotherapy also supports psychological wellbeing, offering a calming, stress-relieving environment that boosts confidence.
Modern Hydrotherapy Facilities at Armonia Rehabilitation Center
Armonia is equipped with a modern two-level therapeutic pool, advanced hydrotherapy technology (including hydromassage, electric lift, underwater bicycle, pool walkway, bubble baths, and special flotation devices), and therapists trained in modern hydrotherapeutic techniques. These resources ensure the best possible rehabilitation results.
Armonia is the most reliable and specialized rehabilitation center in Thessaloniki, offering all necessary medical services and a wide range of treatments—including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychological support. Hydrotherapy plays a vital role in helping patients regain functional ability, autonomy and quality of life.
