Neurological Rehabilitation

Neurological rehabilitation aims to restore as much functionality as possible to individuals who have suffered damage or are experiencing a condition affecting the central or peripheral nervous system.

Conditions such as stroke, head injury, spinal cord injury, myopathies, neuromuscular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, as well as neoplastic lesions of the central nervous system, may significantly impact a patient’s functionality and autonomy, ultimately affecting their quality of life and creating new living circumstances. Everyday activities that were once simple—such as walking, eating, personal hygiene or driving—may now require tremendous effort.

Neurological damage caused by the above conditions—ranging from sensorimotor and cognitive deficits to speech and swallowing impairments—is the core focus of neurological rehabilitation. Its mission is to retrain the patient in the affected functions, slow the progression of certain dysfunctions, improve quality of life and support reintegration into daily routines.

Neurological rehabilitation operates along multiple axes: preventing or halting further loss of function, contributing to the restoration of affected functions, and compensating for deficits that may have occurred. Re-education and reconditioning of the nervous system under new conditions is a major priority.

Each deficit is approached through a treatment strategy with both short-term and long-term goals. These may include improving mobility and upper/lower limb skills, enhancing balance, strengthening muscles, improving gait, enhancing cognitive abilities (memory and concentration), improving sensation, restoring speech and swallowing, and retraining in activities of daily living.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Neurological Rehabilitation

Neurological rehabilitation brings together several specialties and therapeutic programs, including occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physiotherapy. At Armonia Rehabilitation Center, these departments are staffed by highly qualified and experienced professionals who also utilize advanced technology.

1. Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy retrains and strengthens the body using kinesiological, biomechanical, anatomical, neurophysiological and biological principles. The physiotherapy team uses advanced techniques such as PNF, Bobath, Manual Therapy, Mulligan and Kinesiotaping to effectively treat a wide range of neurological conditions. All three specialties operate under the supervision of the physiatrist, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary neurological rehabilitation team.

2. Speech Therapy

Speech therapy addresses speech disorders (aphasia, dysarthria), voice issues (dysphonia) and swallowing disorders (dysphagia). Individual treatment programs are designed for each patient based on the features of their condition. Group sessions are also organized for patients who have improved and are more functional, enhancing communication and social interaction and supporting smoother social reintegration.
For patients with dysphagia requiring further evaluation, a fiberoptic endoscopic swallowing study is performed in collaboration with an otolaryngologist.

3. Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy uses specific, goal-oriented activities to promote independent functioning and personal, social and professional reintegration. The occupational therapist assesses, plans and implements customized programs to enhance the patient’s autonomy in everyday life.

4. Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy, conducted in a two-level pool, reinforces the center’s therapeutic activities. Through techniques combined with the beneficial properties of water, hydrotherapy supports gradual patient autonomy by improving motor function, balance, range of motion and muscle relaxation.

5. Art Psychotherapy

Visual means are also used to support communication and emotional expression in individuals who have difficulty communicating verbally. Patients of any age may participate in art psychotherapy groups without needing any specific talent. Painting, drawing and collage help express concerns, cultivate skills and support steps toward social reintegration.

Psychological Support in Neurological Rehabilitation

The deficits experienced after neurological damage affect not only physical functioning but also emotional wellbeing—for both the patient and their family. Families are called to remain calm and understanding throughout the rehabilitation process, making psychological support a crucial aspect of care.

The feelings of lost movement, freedom and independence often create a period of personal crisis that requires specialized support. At Armonia, the patient’s mental state—cognitive functions, emotions and behavior—is assessed to help shape the individualized treatment plan. Psychological support is also offered to family members who must adapt to the new circumstances.

Neurological rehabilitation is an invaluable tool for a patient’s return to daily life under the best possible conditions, considering all new challenges. Therefore, selecting the appropriate rehabilitation unit is critical to achieving optimal therapeutic outcomes.
